A. The 10 Most Important Wine Regions in the World

If we would have to decide to only study 10 wine regions, with the requirement of covering a wide spectrum of the most distinctive flavors and the greatest potential for quality -- which wine regions would we choose?

We often observe in our tasting events that consumers are overwhelmed by the enormous amounts of wine styles and wine regions to choose from. Abundance has become a liability that confuses and corrupts the truth-seeking wine connoisseur.

We suggest to initially focus on the great classics. Just like in art and literature, they are the best place to start. The best place to gain an appreciation, and a safe and structured process of enjoyment that can be transformed into systematic and long-lasting knowledge.

Here are the 10 regions that satisfy these criteria. They are not only the endgame for any serious wine lover, they also can be a great starting point of wine appreciation. In no particular order, because all 10 together create the "world of wine" in its essentials.

1. Alsace, France
2. Barolo, Italy
3. Bordeaux, France
4. Burgundy, France
5. Chianti and Montalcino, Italy
6. Loire Valley, France
7. Northern Rhone, France
8. Rioja, Spain
9. Mosel, Germany
10. Napa Valley, California

Obviously some readers may not agree. Write me if you want to challenge this list. You must name a different wine region, and one from this list that is of lesser importance. If you get me to agree, I will send you a Barolo.

Dr. Dwight Furrow, CSW can hardly hide his disappointment. After tasting value wines for many years, he found out that most of them are horrible crimes against the virtues of complexity, clarity and balance.

Read HERE how he exposed an American cheap-wine culture with little distinction and pleasure.

Dwight's escape into high-end wine will be featured in next month's newsletter.
